Art Fun shop Cartooning is designed for the artists who really like to draw. Participants will learn how to draw funny faces, looney lettering, awesome aliens, super heroes, adorable animals and create your own comic strip. Cory Geishauser, the artist formerly known as “Steamer”, will be the instructor for this workshop which will be held on Tuesdays, February 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th at Altoona Area Jr. High School, 1400 7th Avenue, Altoona. The times for ages 7, 8, and 9 years old are 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and 10, 11, and 12 years old from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The cost for this program is $35.00 per participants with a maximum of 12 (minimum of 6) participants per age group.
Children’s Self Defense This dynamic four week introductory program will teach your child the fundamentals necessary to gain self confidence and to stop being bullied or being a victim on the playground. Learn to stand up to aggression and walk away a winner. This program introduces the child to a variety of martial arts skills while emphasizing the importance of physical fitness. The sessions will be held on Saturdays, May 5th through May 26th from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Progressive Martial Arts Systems, Route 764, Duncansville. This program is for boys and girls in grades 3-6. The cost of the program is $40.00 with the deadline to register being Thursday, May 3rd. The instructor for this program will be Rocco Alianiello, a 4th Degree Black Belt.
Drawing, Painting 3 Dimensional Art These classes will cover abstract design, three dimensional concepts and acrylic painting. Students will choose their own ideas after given the medium and proper techniques. Classes are laid back and will teach students art terms, techniques, and styles. The classes will be held on Saturdays, February 25th thru March 31st from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for those in grades 5 and 6. These classes will be held at the 6th Ward Community Center, 2101 5th Avenue, Altoona. The cost for this class is $60.00 with a maximum number of participants of 10 and a minimum of 6. Deadline to register is Monday, February 20th.

Rules and Regulations - 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Elementary Basketball
Elementary Community Basketball Clinic The CBRC will be holding a basketball clinic for boys and girls in grades 4, 5, and 6 at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse. Cost is $10, with all proceeds benefiting the CBRC Scholarship Fund. The clinic will be held on Saturday, March 17th. Billy Clapper, Penn State Altoona Men's Basketball Coach, along with student athletes will be volunteering their time and talents for instruction. The times are Grade 4 - 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM; Grade 5 - 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM; and Grade 6 - 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM. The clinic will be held at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse, 1415 6th Avenue.
Flower and Vegetable Gardening Award winning flower gardens just don’t happen! Learn some of the trade secrets that Penn State Master Gardeners use to produce beautiful floral displays in their backyard. During week one, the instructors will review basic principles of gardening and will highlight topics such as site preparation, garden planning, varietal selection, nutrient management and insect and disease control. Week two will spotlight flower gardening, delving into annual, perennial and shade gardening. During the final week, the focus will be on vegetable gardening and topics like soil testing and transplant production. All participants will receive a reference packet containing some of Penn State Extension’s most authoritative gardening publications. The classes will be held on Tuesday’s, March 27th, April 3rd and 10th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Altoona Area Jr. High School, 1400 7th Avenue, Altoona. The cost will be $20.00 per adult with a minimum number of participants of 10. Deadline to register is March 21st.
Golf Clinic This four week instructional clinic will focus on the fundamentals of the game. Group lessons for area youth with equipment provided to those who need it, will be taught by Tom Koehle, head golf professional at Iron Masters Country Club and head men’s and women’s golf coach at Penn State Altoona. Pre-registration is mandatory, in order to provide proper individual instruction. The dates of the clinic are Saturday, January 21st, 28th, February 4th and 18th. The clinic is for ages 7-11 meeting at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM and ages 12-16 meeting at 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The clinic will be held at the 6th Ward Community Center, 2101 5th Avenue, Altoona. The cost is $60.00 per participant with the deadline to register being Thursday, January 19th.
Basic Guitar/5 String Banjo Using common songs you will learn how to accompany yourself or someone else. The instructor, Dan Hulse, has 45 years experience in playing and teaching. His main focus is matching the student’s interest to the basics they need to have fun with music. The sessions will be held on Wednesdays, February 22nd thru April 11th at the Altoona Area Jr. High School, 1400 7th Avenue, Altoona. Basic Guitar lessons will be held 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and 5 String Banjo from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, both for ages 10 and up. The cost for the class is $50.00 with a maximum number of participants of 10 and a minimum number of 3. Deadline to register is Friday, February 17th.
Half-Pint Skillastics introduces pre-schoolers (ages 3-5) to a variety of movement skills as well as encouraging creativity and imagination in a non-competitive but active environment. This class also promotes color, number and shape recognition helping to solidify these skills prior to entering grade school. It all happens on the move, featuring 36 fun drills set to music. The cost is $25 and classes will take place on Saturdays, beginning April 14th through May 5th at the 6th Ward Community Center from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM. Registration deadline is April 12th.
Indoor Batting Instruction Clinic The clinic will focus on hitting and the development of a proper swing for ultimate hitting performance. Our instructors will evaluate hitter’s swings and work with them on specific drills to improve their mechanics. These practice sessions will help individuals turn theory into technique, technique into habit, and habit into reaction. The clinic will be held on Sundays from February 12th to March 25th with hour long session times from 10:00 AM to 8:00 pm. The clinic is for those between the ages of 7 and 12 and will be held at the East Juniata Community Center, 1609 N. 5th Avenue, Altoona. The cost is $65.00. There are a maximum number of 6 participants per session. Deadline to register is Wednesday, February 8th.
Instructional Basketball This program offers instruction to children in grades 2 and 3. Volunteer coaches teach the basic fundamentals in basketball using eight foot baskets. Games offer instruction with no score or standings being kept. Program fee is of $39.00 per participant. An Organizational Meetings will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012. Please call the CBRC office at 949-2231 for the time and location of your schools meeting. Parents are asked to attend. Participants are not required to attend. Practice times will be determined at this meeting and then practices will be held on January 21, 28 and February 4. Games will begin on Saturday, February 11, 2012 and continue for 7 weeks. Deadline to register is January 12th.
Instructional Sports Clinic for Children, Ages 4 – 6 is an instructional clinic for beginners, to teach them the fundamentals of baseball, basketball and soccer. The clinic is held on Saturdays, beginning April 14th and running until May 5th from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the 6th Ward Community Center. The clinic will also teach sportsmanship, basic skills, team work and proper warm up and cool down activities. Cost is $25. Deadline to register is April 12th with a maximum number of 20 participants.
Introduction to Computer Essentials This course is intended for anyone with little to no computer experience, but has the interest in learning the basics of computer operation. Vocabulary and hands-on experience projects will be stressed. Students will also be introduced to the basics of the internet, word processing and internet communication including e-mail. The program will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM beginning March 13th to March 27th at the Altoona Area Junior High. The class is being led by Jonathan Klingeman, English/Communications Teacher at the Jr. High. The cost is $40 with a maximum of 12 (8 minimum) participants. Deadline to register is March 12th.
Introduction to Photography This six (6) week class is intended for photo enthusiasts interested in learning basic photo taking skills. Necessary equipment is a notebook, pen, and a digital or film camera (preferably SLR). The instructor is Barbara Lauver, Owner/Operator of Sharp Edge Photos of Altoona. This class is for high school age and older and will run Wednesdays, February 8th to March 14th from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the Altoona Area Jr. High School. The cost is $30.00 with a maximum of 12 participants (8 minimum). Deadline to register is Monday, February 6th.
Junior Hoopsters Want to learn how to dribble, shoot or play defense like the pros? Improve motor skill development while practicing the fundamentals of the game? Increase eye-hand coordination, self confidence and build team work skills through drills and games? This program will teach the fundamentals of basketball to help children to enter our second and third grade instructional basketball program. The program will be held on Saturday mornings at the Booker T Washington Center, 1010 19th Street, and continue for eight weeks. Each session will last 45 minutes. An organization meeting will be held on Saturday, January 28th. The cost for this program is $35.00 with the deadline to register Thursday, January 26th.
Learn to Skate Classes will be held at Galactic Ice for ages 5 and up. Class “A” will be on Tuesdays, Feb. 7th, 14th, 21st, 28, March 6th & 13th from 6:00 PM – 6:40 PM Class “B” will be held on Saturdays, April 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th, May 5th & 12th from 11 AM to 11:40 AM. Learn to Skate Basic Skills program is endorsed by the United States Figure Skating Program. Learn the most important fundamentals of skating for hockey or figure skating from the Galactic Ice professional coaching staff. We offer ages 5 through adult classes. Cost is $45 if you register with the Recreation Office at 2101 5th Ave., Altoona from 9 AM to 4 PM. Life Screening The CBRC, in collaboration with Life Line Screening, will host health screenings that could save your life. Vascular packages range from$129.00 to $159.00. Screenings will be held on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM at the BTW Community Center at 1010 19th Street. Line Dancing Participants will learn various dances to all music types, including waltz, easy listening, oldies, Irish, Latin, country, cha cha, hip hop, Charleston, stroll, gospel, rock-n-roll, hula, hustle and more. Exercise your brain and your heart and enjoy the fun. The Instructor is Julie Paige and she works with ages 16 and up. This class is being held from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Wednesdays at the Booker T. Washington Community Center, 1010 19th Street, Altoona beginning April 4th through May 9th. The cost is $35 with the deadline to register being Monday, April 2nd.
Magic/Theater Arts This exciting and interactive class will combine the basic skills of magic along with the performing art of theater. The class will focus on basic card and coin tricks, stage performance, improvisation, character performance and showmanship. No experience is necessary. The instructor Tony Greiner will hold the class on Tuesdays, February 21st thru March 27th from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the Juniata Elementary School, 418 N. 8th Avenue, Altoona. This class is for ages 7 to 14 with a maximum of 10 (5 minimum) participants.

Science Club Participants in this six week program will exercise their minds learning science in a fun interactive manner. Have a project at school? Bring your questions to class. Materials will be provided and some projects go home with the students. This class is for those in grades 4th thru 6th and will meet on Tuesdays February 21st thru March 27th from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Altoona Area Jr. High School, 1400 7th Avenue, Altoona. The cost for this class is $30.00 with a maximum of 12 (8 minimum) participants.
Strong Women The CBRC and the Penn State Extension office are once again offering a Strong Women program for a cost of $68. This program is a safe, simple and highly effective strength training program for women 40 years of age and older. The program is held at the East Juniata Community Center at 1608 N. 5th Avenue, Altoona on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, beginning January 17th and will run through April 5th.
Swim Lessons for children ages 4 and up will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Group A) or from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Group B), at the AAHS swimming pool. Two sessions are being offered. 1st session is March 1st to March 27th and the 2nd session is April 3rd to April 26th. Maximum is 18 participants per group. Cost is $55 per session. Deadline to register is February 28th for the first session and March 29th for the second session. There is a picture package also being offered for these classes. Sign up today! Tennis Camp is a six-week instructional clinic which will focus on the fundamentals of tennis. Participants will use the newest training aids. The classes will be held at ProCare Health Systems, Inc. at 3200 Fairway Drive, Altoona at a cost of $50. Classes are held Saturdays beginning February 18th through March 24th. There are three different age groups; Ages 4-6 class time will be from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM; Ages 7-10 class time will be from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and Ages 11-14 class time is 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Please register at the Recreation Office, 2101 5th Ave., Altoona by Thursday, February 16th.
5th and 6th Grade Boys Volleyball This exciting new program will be organized the first part of April. An organizational meeting will be held with coaches and players being required to attend. Rosters will be determined and rules/regulations distributed. Registration forms will be sent home with the students through the schools during the month of March. Mark Your Calendar!!!
Zumba This program is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporates Latin and international music and dance movements, creating a dynamic, exciting, exhilarating, and effective fitness system. The ZUMBA program is designed for everyone, people of any fitness level and age. The instructor of this program is Jennifer Stack, a licensed Zumba instructor. This six week program begins on January 17th and runs through February 21st. The classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the 6th Ward Center, 2101 5th Avenue. The cost for this fun filled exercise program is just $40.00 for six classes. Come see what everyone is talking about! Deadline to register for this class is January 13th.
