The Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission is offering a variety of programs and activities in the upcoming months for all ages. Pre-registration and pre-payment is required for all classes. MAX SPORTACUS' SUMMER DAY CAMP - The Central Blair Recreation & Park Commission is delighted to offer a summer day camp program that is like playing with your friends in your own backyard.  The camp is for boys and girls entering Kindergarten through Grade 6 in the school year 2013-14.  This is a safe, structured, indoor program held in an air conditioned building.  This program is staffed with leaders who are experienced and have a desire to work with children in this age group.  Campers will participate in arts and crafts, games, sporting activities, movies and much, much more.  We are in the process of preparing a calendar with weekly themes that include Gooey Science, Iron chefs, Music, Dance and Theater, Team Building, Nature and Animals, Performances, and Arts and Craft shows.  Daily activities will be available on the first day of camp.  Children will be transported to at least eight (8) field trips (at an additional cost) to places like:  Morrison’s Cove Memorial Park, Prospect Pool, Carmike Theater, Blair County Ballpark and more!  Special guests will be scheduled to visit the children throughout the summer.  During the summer we will also hold our very special event, “The Carnival of Games”!  Participants will have the opportunity to play a variety of games and redeem their winnings at a prize table filled with tons of treasures!

LOCATION:  Max’s Club House - 1010 – 19th Street, Altoona; this facility is air-conditioned.

COST:  $85/week or $65 for 3 days or less, which includes breakfast & lunch provided through the Altoona Area School District’s summer program.  The breakfast and lunch program will begin on the third day of the camp (June 13th).  Participants are invited to bring their own breakfast and lunch for the first two days.

SUMMER ROCKS - We are bringing back summer, like it used to be!  Hanging out with your friends, playing outside and doing crafts. Boys and girls ages 6 to 12 will not want to miss out on our SUMMER ROCKS OUTDOOR CAMP.  This camp will provide the opportunity to enjoy outdoor fun and recreation in the sun at your local community parks.  Qualified staff will not only supervise but assist with daily activities that support our weekly themes.  There will be sports, arts and crafts, music, educational experiences, special guests and many more exciting surprises.  The program will include weekly field trips, at an additional cost, supporting the theme of the week. Themes include, Nature and Animals, Team Building, Gooey Science, Music, Arts and Crafts, Max Sportacus Olympics, and much more.

Our Carnival of Games will be held on August 1st at the East Juniata Community Center.  This extremely exhilarating year-end activity includes games, prizes, face painting, cotton candy, camp awards and creates memories that will last a lifetime.  *Participants in session one and two will be invited to the Carnival of Games.*

T-BALL - This six (6) week evening program is for children age 4 (if you are 4 after July 31, 2013, you are too young) and entering Kindergarten in September 2013.  The basic fundamentals of baseball including hitting, fielding, and base running will be the primary focus of the instruction.  Participants will hit the ball off of a tee. Players will need a baseball glove. This program is designed to help players move up to our Instructional Baseball Program.  Practice field locations are Fairview, 201 25th Avenue or Columbia Ballfield, 5th Avenue and Crescent Road.  PRACTICES will be held the weeks of June 17th and June 24th on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (Thursday will be used for rain-outs) for a one hour and 15 minute time period.  Practice times will be determined at our organizational meeting for parents on Thursday, June 13th, at 5:30 PM.  The meeting will be held at the 6th Ward Community Center, 2101 5th Avenue, Altoona.  Games will be played at the Dick Bickel Memorial Field at Garfield Park beginning Tuesday, July 2nd.  Games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for four (4) weeks.  There is a discounted cost of $40 for registrations received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 11th.  Registrations after this date will be $47.  The cost includes a t-shirt and a certificate of participation.

There are scholarships available for low to moderate income residents of the Altoona Area School District.  Each scholarship is $20 and the participant pays the remaining amount of $20.  Call 949-2231 for additional information.  Scholarship registrations, with proof of eligibility, are accepted ONLY at the office and must register no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

INSTRUCTIONAL BASEBALL - This six (6) week evening program is for children entering 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade in September 2013.  The program offers the basic fundamentals of baseball with the instructor pitching the ball to the player and the program is designed for the player who may move on to Little League. BATON This five week program, designed for girls in grades 1 through 6, will teach the fundamentals necessary for twirling and marching.  There will be a total of 6 practices however, two practices will be held during the last week of the program.  Participants should wear shorts or sweatpants and sneakers to the practices.   Former majorettes will be here to teach you.  All you need is a baton and you’re ready to twirl!  This exciting program concludes with the girls marching in the Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27, 2013.  Lessons are Wednesday evenings beginning April 24, 2013 at the Sixth Ward Center, 2101 Fifth Avenue at the following times:  (week 5 will have an additional night of practice)

Picture packages are available for a cost of $12.00 for registrations received prior to the April 23rd deadline.  After that date the cost will be $14.00.  This package includes one 5x7 squad picture, one 3x5 individual picture and one display folder. Pictures will be taken at one of the lessons. 

SHAPING YOUR WORLD - The newest most innovative concept in health, fitness, and well being for youth is being offered by Pro-Care Health and Fitness through Central Blair Recreation Commission.  This interactive and informative program was designed by top Physicians, Dieticians, and Athletic Trainers, and will educate you, train you, shape you, and build you into the healthy person you know is inside of you.  This program is intended to teach the foundations of exercise, healthy eating, morale building, relaxation techniques, importance of playtime, and how to get fit for life. Conducted by certified experts in their fields. Activities include:  Youth Boot Camp-Camp Style training, “Ask the Doctor” session, Healthy Eating plans, personal exercise plans, peer pressure techniques, guest lectures from our experts, and teaching of the art of mental calmness and clarity through strength and relaxation techniques.

This program is held at Pro-Care Health and Fitness, 3200 Fairway Drive, Altoona on June 13th, 18, 20th, 25th, 27th and July 2nd from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM for those age 10 to 18. The cost for the six sessions is $55.00. There is a limit of 15 participants in this class.

YOGA FOR YOUTH - Youth Yoga: Promotes flexibility, strength, and balance in a relaxed setting. Using props to assist poses, you will use our own body weight to work on strengthening upper and lower bodies. Deep breathing will be introduced to help in poses and promote relaxation. This Yoga for Youth class is being held at Pro-Care Health and Fitness, 3200 Fairway Drive, Altoona on Tuesday and Thursdays - June 13th, 18th, 20th, 25th, 27th, and July 2nd from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM. The cost for these 6 sessions is $45.00 and is for those age 8 to 16 years old. The class is limited to 14 participants.

TENNIS CAMP - This six-week instructional clinic will focus on the fundamentals of tennis. It offers a great combination of learning, skills and games; participants will use the newest training aids throughout the six sessions. This program is a great form of exercise as well as providing an excellent introduction to a sport they will enjoy for a lifetime.

Tennis camp is held at ProCare Health and Fitness, 3200 Fairway Drive, Altoona and will begin Saturday, June 22nd and run through July 27th. The camp is divided into three age groups: Age 4-6 is 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, age 7-10 is 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and age 11-14 is 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. The cost of the camp is $50.00 per participant and this includes a T-Shirt and certificate of participation. There is a maximum number of participants per age group of 22. The deadline to register is Thursday, June 20, 2013.

BOWLING - Holiday Bowl presents an Instructional Bowling Clinic which consists of 6 sessions of learning the basic fundamentals of bowling. This program will teach the proper way to handle the ball, proper throwing techniques, learn how the game is scored, as well as, making new friendships and a fun way to exercise. Bowling helps burn calories and works muscle groups usually not exercised. Bowling is a lifetime sport families can enjoy together, you never have to worry about the weather, you can always go bowling.

The bowling clinic is held at Holiday Bowl Altoona, 181 Bowling Lane, Altoona for kids 6 and up, and there will be three different times you can sign up for the clinic. The first time frame is Tuesday's, June 18th and runs through to July 23rd from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, Time two is Tuesday evenings, June 18th through July 23rd from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM; and the third time is Thursday's, June 20th to August 1st from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The cost is $50.00 per participant which includes free use of the balls and shoes and also includes a certificate of participation. The deadline to register for this clinic is Friday, June 14, 2013.

STRONG WOMEN  Make a commitment to grow stronger and trimmer, and feel better about yourself. Strong Women is a safe, simple and highly effective strength training program for women 40 years of age and older. The CBRC and the Penn State Extension office are once again offering this program for a cost of $68. The new session of Strong Women will start April 25th and run through July 23rd. Both sessions - 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM and the 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM will be held at East Juniata Community Center. ZUMBA  This program is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporates Latin and international music and dance movements, creating a dynamic, exciting, exhilarating, and effective fitness system. The ZUMBA program is designed for everyone, people of any fitness level and age.  The instructor of this program is Cassey Newberry, a licensed Zumba instructor.  The CBRC will hold two sessions of Zumba this summer. Session One will be held on Sunday's, June 23rd to August 11th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. The second session is held on Friday's, June 21st to August 9th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Both sessions will be held at the 6th Ward Community Center. The cost for the 8 classes is $35.00 or $5.00 per class. There is a minimum of 6 pre-registered participants to hold the class.

SWIM LESSONS - PLEASE NOTE: The CBRC will have swim lessons at Prospect Pool this summer June 17th to June 27th, Monday through Thursday evenings from 7:15 PM to 8:15 PM. The cost is $55.00 per participant. These lessons are for age 4 and over. You can sign up for the classes at Prospect Pool.

SUMMER COMPETITIVE SWIMMING PROGRAM - AGES 6 TO 18 - Would you like to improve your swimming skills and eventually compete on your high school’s swim team or another competitive program?  This introductory program might be what you are looking for.  Children ages 6 to 18 will learn and improve upon the basics of competitive swimming.  Proper stroke techniques and training methods will be emphasized.  You must be able to satisfactorily swim the length of Prospect Pool to qualify for this program using crawl stroke and rotary breathing.  Our goal is to evolve into a summer swim team in a league against other teams.  Participating in the Keystone Games swimming competition could be another goal of this program.  Instruction will be under the direction of certified instructors, Ron & Tina Johnston.  An organizational meeting will be held on Thursday, June 13th - 6:00 PM at Prospect Pool. Parents and participants are encouraged to attend.  Instructors will go over the details of the program and answer all your questions. The start date is June 17th and the program will run through to August 1st. The program will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays - 9:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. for ages 6 to 12 and 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. for ages 13 to 18. The cost of this program is $50.00 per participant, however if you have a Prospect Pool pass - then it is free. There is a maximum of 50 participants per age group with the deadline to sign up for the program being June 10th. You can sign up for this program at the CBRC office, 2101 5th Avenue, Altoona.

           

5th & 6th GRADE GIRLS VOLLEYBALL -The Central Blair Recreation and Park Commission is accepting registrations for a 5th and 6th grade girls’ volleyball league. This is a competitive league; therefore, the student is required to play for the school they attend. The must play rule will be in effect. Practices and games are played at the BTW Community Center, 1010 19th St, Altoona.  An organizational meeting will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 for coaches and players.  At this meeting, practice times, rules and regulations and rosters will be distributed. In order for all teams to have a fair number of players, teams with low numbers will be combined together. Games are scheduled Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings. Tentatively, games start at 5:30 p.m., and run every 45 minutes, thereafter. Any special requests for game times must be expressed at the organizational meeting.

The  meeting times for each school on Monday, March 25, 2013 at the BTW Community Center, 1010 19th Street, Altoona PA are as follows: 5:00 PM - Pleasant Valley, Logan, Juniata, Juniata Gap and Bellwood; 5:45 PM - Irving/McAuliffe Heights, W & J, Penn Lincoln, Ebner, Great Commission, Baker, Wright, & Hollidaysburg

Volleyball Rules and Regulations

DISC GOLF - Maybe you have heard about the fastest growing sport around.  Disc Golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by people of any age and ability.  Eric Keim is a local Disc Golf enthusiast with 35 years of experience throwing frisbees and now discs.  He is the current President of the Blair Bedford Cambria Disc Golf Organization and designer of most area courses.  Come join others in learning the basic throws and rules of this great sport.  The class is taught by Eric Keim and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, and 27 from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM for those 7 years of age and up. Tuesday's class will be held at Valley View Park, 302 Valley View Boulevard and Thursday's class will be held at Highland Park, 4719 5th Avenue. The cost for this fun class is jus $25.00, which includes a mid-range disc at the first class with paid registration. There is a minimum number of 4 participants with a maximum number of 12.
